In 1966, a plot of nearly six acres of land, located about seven kilometres from the Agra Cathedral, was purchased by the late Br Aloysius Fernandes, OFM Cap., then Superior Regular, with the intention of establishing a friary. This initial step laid the groundwork for what would later become Capuchin Ashram, Agra, in the Archdiocese of Agra.​

                 In 1972, Br Hugh, OFM Cap., the then Superior Regular, oversaw the construction of the first room on the property, marking the beginning of the physical development of the Ashram. On 8 September 1973, Most Rev. Dr Dominic Athaide, the late Archbishop of Agra, formally laid the foundation stone for a chapel-cum-residence, giving an ecclesial and missionary focus to the emerging community.​

                 After he was elected Superior Regular in October 1974, Br John Joseph D’Almeida, OFM Cap., began residing in a simple building on the property, which later became the headquarters of the Mission. The ground floor of the main Ashram building was completed in 1976, and the first floor was added in 1984, gradually shaping the friary into a stable Capuchin residence and mission Centre.​

               While the school became the primary apostolate of the Capuchins at Capuchin Ashram, the friars also extended their ministry by rendering spiritual services in the diocese and to the diocesan clergy. This dual commitment to education and pastoral ministry continues to characterise the life and work of the community.​

               Education emerged as the central mission of Capuchin Ashram with the founding of St Conrad Inter College on the same campus. The foundation stone of the College was blessed by Archbishop Dominic Athaide and laid by Mr A. N. Sehgal, Administrator of Nagar Mahapalika, Agra, on 13 April 1978. The College building was completed in 1984, providing a significant institutional base for the educational apostolate.​

                To further enhance its service to children, a new Kindergarten block was constructed in 1992, allowing the friars to cater to younger students and thus accompany children from their earliest years of schooling. The entire campus of St Conrad Inter College belongs to St Fidelis Province, North India, reflecting the Province’s long-term commitment to educational ministry in Agra.​

                 In addition to the formal school, Capuchin Ashram runs an evening school for underprivileged children who are unable to access regular education because of financial constraints. Many of these children spend their mornings collecting rags to support themselves and their families, and they attend classes in the evenings to receive basic education and formation.​

                   Students who show strong academic potential and a genuine desire to continue their studies are accompanied beyond basic instruction, receiving ongoing support throughout their academic journey. Through this outreach, the friars at Capuchin Ashram remain committed to forming young generations to become better citizens of the country, especially those on the margins of society.​
