Vinayalaya was born of the faith-filled interest and efforts of the Canadian Capuchin Superior Regulars, Br Jean François and Br Alain Picard, who desired a place where prayer and contemplation could flourish alongside pastoral service. In 1978, a small plot of land was purchased in Sarnath and the foundation was laid for a modest structure consisting of five rooms and a chapel, marking the humble beginning of this house of prayer.​As the ministry grew, another small piece of land adjacent to the first plot was bought, allowing for an extension of the original building. On this expanded site, nine additional rooms were constructed along with a small hall, dining room and kitchen, making Vinayalaya better equipped to welcome guests and support its spiritual programmes.​

         In 1984, the Canadian Capuchins graciously handed over Vinayalaya to the Indian Capuchins so that their missionary and pastoral presence in the diocese of Varanasi could continue in a stable way. This gesture also ensured that the contemplative dimension of prayer would be intentionally promoted among all who come to this holy land, where seekers from many traditions have long searched for truth and inner peace.​Over the years, Vinayalaya has become a quiet spiritual retreat visited by religious women, priests and lay people, as well as by members of other religions who seek a God-experience through prayer and silence. Drawing from the Franciscan-Capuchin charism, the atmosphere of the house invites simplicity, silence and listening to God in a context marked by interreligious openness.​

         The friars residing in Vinayalaya render regular spiritual and pastoral services to religious communities and formation centers in the neighborhoods, extending the grace of the house beyond its walls. Through retreats, spiritual guidance, sacramental ministry and fraternal presence, they help many to deepen their relationship with God while keeping alive the missionary spirit envisioned by the first Canadian Capuchin founders.​
