The Jesuits of Jamshedpur first implanted seeds of faith among the people of Kutkudungri under the leadership of Rt Rev L. T. Picachy, SJ, then Bishop of Jamshedpur. In the early years, the Fathers operated a modest Hindi-medium school housed in a small hall dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua.

       On 30 November 1997, Rt Rev Felix Toppo, SJ, the current Bishop of Jamshedpur, officially established St. Anthony’s Church as a parish. He entrusted its pastoral care to the Capuchins of St. Fidelis Province North India. Br. Boniface Vijayan Menezes, OFM Cap. became the first Capuchin parish priest and began the franciscan presence and service in the region.

       The construction of the parish church and the adjoining friary named “Atma Deep”, began in 2002 and concluded in 2003. On 7 December 2003, Rt Rev Felix Toppo, SJ, solemnly blessed both structures, formally inaugurating this new religious community entrusted to the Capuchins.

       Since its establishment, the friars at Atma Deep have actively engaged in educational, social, and pastoral ministries. They accompany the faithful and local community in their spiritual and human development. Through their dedicated presence, the Capuchins continue the missionary legacy of the Jesuits, nurturing the faith first planted in Kutkudungri.
