St Anthony Friary, Pokhari
(2014, Jamshedpur Diocese)

St Anthony Friary is located at Pokhari, about 8 km from Jamshedpur city, within the campus of St Anthony Academy. The friars residing in this house dedicate themselves entirely to the ministry of education, which is the principal apostolate of the province.

In 1997, St Anthony’s Church, Kutkudungri, was declared a parish and entrusted to the Capuchins of St Fidelis Province, North India. From that time onward, the parishioners consistently requested the friars to begin an English‑medium school for their children, recognizing their growing pastoral and educational needs.

Responding to this genuine need, a five‑acre plot of land was purchased in 2009 during the triennium of Br John Barla, OFM Cap., then Provincial Minister. In 2010, under the leadership of the parish priest, Br Anand Prakash Toppo, OFM Cap., a small play school named St Anthony Academy was opened in the parish premises at Kutkudungri with just seven children.

As the school gradually grew, a new school building was planned and constructed at Pokhari through the efforts of the building commission led by Br Remish Ekka, OFM Cap., and under the supervision of Br Anand Prakash Toppo, OFM Cap. At the beginning of the academic year 2014, St Anthony Academy was shifted from Kutkudungri to the new campus at Pokhari.

Today, the friary stands within this school campus, and the friars of St Anthony Friary continue to serve the local Church through their committed involvement in the ministry of education.
