The Capuchin mission at Champa began at the invitation of His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Victor Henry Thakur, the Archbishop of Raipur. Responding to this call, the Provincial and Council of St. Fidelis Province, North India, decided to establish a Capuchin presence in Champa and sent two brothers, Br. Philip Lakra OFM Cap and Br. Walter Barla OFM Cap, to begin the mission. They arrived in Champa on 06.12.2021 and initially stayed in a rented house until the friary and community Centre, intended also for ecclesial use, were constructed and inaugurated.​

       The foundation stones of the new friary and community Centre were blessed by Br. Herman Minj OFM Cap, the Provincial Minister of St. Fidelis Province North India, Lucknow. After the completion of the building, the friary and Centre were formally inaugurated by Br. Herman Minj OFM Cap and solemnly blessed by His Grace Most Rev. Dr. Victor Henry Thakur, the Archbishop of Raipur.​

       Since then, the friars residing in Champa have generously made themselves available for the spiritual needs of the Catholic faithful. By living a life marked by Capuchin simplicity, they give witness and embody the other dimensions of the Capuchin charism. A good number of Catholic families regularly participate in the liturgical and spiritual services on Sundays and on other special occasions.​

       The prayer life of the friars is a visible sign of the Capuchin charism and sustains their pastoral outreach. This fraternity is also conveniently located, being not very far from Champa Railway Station.
