Motihari is a small-town bordering Nepal and lying close to the Himalayas, and it serves as the district headquarters of East Champaran in the state of Bihar. History tells that in this land of Champaran; the growth of Christianity was closely linked with the ministry of the Capuchins.​

The first Capuchin to arrive in Champaran was Br Joseph Mary, OFM Cap., who came in 1745 at the invitation of the then King of Bettiah, Dhrub Singh. Gifted with medical knowledge, Br Joseph Mary became the family doctor of the royal household, which led to a deep bond of trust and friendship between the king and the priest.​

The king, pleased with the life and service of Br Joseph Mary, granted him permission to preach about the Kingdom of God in his realm and also offered him ample land for mission activities. After Br Joseph Mary, many other Capuchin missionaries came to the region and continued the work he had begun.​

Following the First World War, all the Capuchin missionaries returned to their home countries, entrusting the Champaran mission to the Jesuits and the local clergy. After a long interval, the local bishop once again invited the Capuchins to serve in the diocese.​

In 1982, the Capuchins of St Fidelis Vice Province took charge of a parish at Chanpatia, which was later handed over to the diocese. Subsequently, in 1986, a new mission station at Motihari was entrusted to the Capuchins, marking a fresh chapter in their presence in this region.​

The Motihari mission was elevated to the status of a parish in 1989 by the Bishop of Muzaffarpur, and a new church was blessed on 31 October 1993. To provide accommodation and formation for the postulants of the province, a formation house was constructed in 2000 and named Asha Deep.​

In 2008, the postulancy was shifted from Motihari to Kripa Sadan, Aragate, Ranchi. In the same year, an English-medium school was opened at Motihari, which has since become a much sought-after institution on account of its quality education.​

Today, the friars residing in Asha Deep dedicate themselves to teaching in the school and to the spiritual care of the faithful of the parish. By living a genuine community life and serving in humility and simplicity, they bear witness to the Capuchin charism in this historic mission land of East Champaran.​
