Assisi House
Kanthalberia, Kolkata, 2011
Assisi House, Kanthalberia, is situated about half a kilometre from HDCO, New Town. St. Francis Academy, Kristopur, was started by the Province in 2005 as a parish-cum-school on land belonging to the Archdiocese of Kolkata. It began with 25 children and, in the course of time, the strength increased to around 1200 students.
Foreseeing the future educational needs of the students, St. Fidelis Province, North India, decided to acquire its own land for the school. Consequently, 3 acres of land were purchased and registered in August 2011, and soon after the registration, a boundary wall was erected, making the property officially belong to the Province.
The foundation stone for the Administrative Block was laid by Br. John Berchmans Barla, OFM Cap. the then Provincial Minister, on 14 June 2014. Adjacent to this Administrative Block, the construction of the main school building was also initiated. The construction of the School Building began on 9 June 2016 in the presence of then Provincial Minister Br. Remish Ekka, OFM Cap.
In 2017, classes for the primary section commenced in the new school building. Students from the surrounding villages as well as from some parts of New Town are now benefiting the quality education imparted in this institution.
The friars residing in Assisi House dedicate themselves not only to the educational ministry through their involvement in the school, but also to providing spiritual assistance to nearby religious communities. Their simple and dedicated presence offers a distinct Capuchin witness in and around the area of Kanthalberia.
