Gyan Deep, Gaibira
(2005, Rourkela Diocese)

Gyan Deep at Kainsera in Gaibira, in the Catholic Diocese of Rourkela, was established in response to the steady growth of Capuchin vocations in the Odisha region since 1994. Seeing the need for a proper formation house for college-going candidates, the province began planning a dedicated residence at Kainsera in Gaibira.

A plot of about four acres of land was purchased in 1995 with the intention of starting a candidates’ house there, but its opening was postponed for some time. In the meantime, the candidates were accommodated at Clara Nivas, Badibahal, from where they attended a government college for their pre-university studies.

In 2004, the Provincial Council decided formally to start a formation house at Kainsera, Gaibira, so that candidates could attend the Divine Word College run by the SVD Fathers in Gaibira. Rt Rev Alphonse Bilung, SVD, then Bishop of Rourkela, granted permission to construct this formation house for the candidates.

The foundation stone of Gyan Deep was laid by the late Br Aloysius Noronha, OFM Cap., then Provincial Minister, on 14 February 2005. The building was completed and inaugurated in the same year, marking a new phase in the province’s formation programme.

Today, Gyan Deep accommodates candidates from within the province’s jurisdiction who aspire to become future Capuchins. These young men pursue their pre-university studies at Divine Word College while residing in this formation house.

The formator friars not only accompany and guide these candidates as they prepare for their postulancy but also make themselves available for spiritual ministry in the surrounding religious communities and in the parish in which the house is situated. In this way, Gyan Deep serves both as a house of initial formation and as a centre of pastoral and spiritual service in the local Church.
