Jivan Deep, Assisi Nagar (Jiyarappa)
(2014, Khunti Diocese)
Jivan Deep, the Capuchin Novitiate House at Assisi Nagar (Jiyarappa), Khunti, is situated in the Diocese of Khunti, Jharkhand, surrounded by lush green countryside that provides an atmosphere especially conducive for a house of formation specially for Novitiate House. It is located about 40 km from Ranchi.
In 2008, the Provincial Chapter, acknowledging to the long-felt need of the Province, recommended the establishment of a separate Novitiate House. Responding to this decision, Fr. John B. Barla, OFM Cap., the then Provincial Minister, entrusted Fr. Paul Nag, OFM Cap., the Vicar Provincial, with the responsibility of searching for a suitable piece of land. Through his efforts, 7.96 acres of land were negotiated and acquired by 2011, thus laying the foundation for the future Novitiate House.
The construction of the Novitiate House began on 15 January 2013, under the supervision of Fr. Remish Ekka, OFM Cap., and Fr. Dominic Kerketta, OFM Cap. Within the span of one year, the building was completed and the house was inaugurated on 22 February 2014 by Br. Michael Fernandes, OFM Cap., the then General Councilor, and blessed by the Bishop of Khunti, Rt. Rev. Binay Kandulna. With this, the long-cherished desire of the Province for a dedicated Novitiate House was finally realized.
The surrounding village was christened Assisi Nagar by the friars, invoking the spirit and inspiration of St. Francis of Assisi. The house comprises two main sections: the Novitiate block and the Postulancy block, together forming a single campus for initial formation. The Novitiate House officially began its formative activities on 14 May 2014.
At the commencement of the Novitiate, Fr. Paul Nag, OFM Cap., was appointed as Novice Master, while Fr. Simon Murmu, OFM Cap., was designated as Guardian and Postulancy Director. The formator friars residing in this house not only train and accompany the postulants and novices in the Franciscan Capuchin way of life, but also strive to give a living witness to Franciscan values through their own example. Their life of prayer, faithful commitment to their responsibilities, and respect for the dignity of manual work inspire the young brothers to prepare themselves to become good Capuchin friars and to embrace the Franciscan vows with sincerity.
In addition to their primary responsibility of formation, the formator friars also make themselves available for the spiritual needs of the nearby religious communities. In this way, Jivan Deep not only serves as a cradle of Capuchin formation but also as a center of spiritual support and Franciscan presence in the local Church.
