Kripa Sadan, located in Aragate, represents a harmonious integration of parish ministry, education, and religious formation. As a Capuchin community, it embodies the charism of St. Francis of Assisi while serving the Church and local society in the Ranchi region. The institution functions as both a living center of Capuchin spirituality and a spiritual sanctuary for the faithful in the locality.

       Approximately 9 kilometers from Ranchi city lies the quiet hamlet of Aragate, where the Capuchin Fathers recognized an opportunity to establish a permanent presence for missionary work and formation. In 1981, under the visionary leadership of the late Br. John Joseph D’Almeida, OFM Cap., the community acquired 5 acres of land in Aragate while still operating from rented premises in the city. Their intention was clear: to establish both a functioning parish and a formation center in this rural setting.

       The inaugural Capuchin Ashram on this property, subsequently named Kripa Sadan (House of Grace), was officially inaugurated on June 13, 1981, by the late Archbishop of Ranchi, Most Rev. Pius Kerketta, SJ. From these modest beginnings, the community gradually developed Kripa Sadan into a multifaceted center dedicated to worship, education, and religious formation.

       The educational legacy in Aragate predates the Capuchin presence. The Jesuits had established a Hindi-medium school in the area as early as 1936, serving the local population’s educational needs for decades. When the Capuchins assumed stewardship of this institution, they expanded its capacity to include students through Standard X, significantly improving both infrastructure and academic excellence. In 2006, recognizing the evolving needs of the community, the friars transferred operational responsibility of the Hindi-medium school to the PHJC Sisters, ensuring continuity of educational service under dedicated religious leadership.

       To address the community’s demand for quality English-medium education, the friars established Bishop Hartmann Academy in 1996. Today, this institution ranks among the region’s most sought-after schools, distinguished by its emphasis on discipline and values-based education.

       The Capuchins actively minister through St. Francis of Assisi Church, Aragate, a parish dedicated to their founder’s name. The parish serves approximately 4,000 Catholic faithful drawn from surrounding villages and neighborhoods, creating a vibrant worshiping community. The church structure itself was constructed by the friars and formally blessed in 1981. Since its consecration, it has evolved into a dynamic center for liturgical celebration, religious education, and community engagement.

       The friars contribute meaningfully to parish life through, Eucharistic celebrations and sacramental administration, spiritual guidance, catechetical instruction for children and youth, pastoral home visits to parishioners, sacramental preparation programs, support for various parish associations and groups. These ministries collectively nurture faith development and strengthen the spiritual bonds within the community.
