Patna, in ancient times known as Patliputra, is situated on the banks of the river Ganges. Padri Ki Haveli is located in the eastern part of this historic city, in what is today known as Patna City.​

The first Capuchin missionaries to this region, Br Joseph of Ascoli, OFM Cap., and Br Francis Mary of Tours, OFM Cap., arrived in Patna in November 1706, travelling from Chandannagar in West Bengal on their way to Kathmandu and Lhasa. Later, Fr Felix Montechio purchased a small plot of land and built a modest chapel along with a priest’s residence, which in time came to be known as Padri Ki Haveli.​

The present Cathedral Church at Padri Ki Haveli was constructed in 1778 by Fr Joseph of Revato, who was then the Prefect Apostolic. The Capuchins served tirelessly in Patna for over 200 years, until 1919, when they handed over the mission to the American Jesuits.​

After a gap of 70 years, the Capuchins were invited to return by Rt Rev Benedict Osta, SJ, the then Archbishop of Patna. Responding to his persistent invitation, the Capuchins came back to Padri Ki Haveli, Patna City, on 15 December 1991.​

Today, the Catholic population of the parish is about 500. The parish has two sub-stations located roughly 6 kilometers away from the main church.​

The friars residing at Padri Ki Haveli dedicate themselves to the spiritual care of the faithful in the parish and its two sub-stations. They also extend their spiritual assistance to the surrounding religious communities, continuing the long-standing Capuchin tradition of service in this historic mission.
